Arabesque is a complicated, multi-faceted step with lots of ways to approach it. Even the bendiest body, though, with the craziest back, needs to support the arabesque with the front of their trunk.

In this clip from my “Dance Pedagogy for Hypermobility” workshop, we look at a typical “gumby” spine and how supporting it from the front of the trunk gives Aubri even more freedom and stability in her arabesque.

Yes, hypermobility can be beautiful. Yes, it can make some positions easier. But also - the body still needs to be supported. The joints still need to be healthy and not overloaded in order to insure a long, healthy career!

Doing a fun (and hard) combination of rollover and teaser with the added challenge of no springs!

I love this exercise for a few reasons:

Rolling over is harder with your hands on a bar versus the floor, really challenging your whole anterior chain;

Rolling up into a teaser is harder without the spring to assist, again challenging that anterior chain; and

The whole exercise demands that the body make quick decisions and adjustments as you go, very much like complex moves in dance.

Plus it feels great!

@braveballerina.evee is in between her time with @ellisonballet and heading to the @russian_masters_ballet in Spain. Now's not the time for new challenges , it's the time to keep her healthy and on top of her game.

Coming back from hip surgery can be frustrating, but @fin.thedancer is making great progress!

One of our biggest obstacles right now is scar tissue and getting mobility back. I Love Turkish Get Ups for pretty much anyone, and here she can move through a range of motion, a range of loads, but still be in control of how far she goes.

Plenty of progress still to make but she's moving really well.

Added bonus with Gus - he's about six pounds, so we could use a weight, but he wobbles around a bit more, which adds that touch of perturbation to her trunk.

And of course, Gus just makes everything better!

How do you stand on a hyper extended knee?

That's the question that plagues so many hypermobile dancers.

Do you lock the knee, resting passively in your end range? Do you soften it, so it feels bent and unsupportive?

Finding a way to stand a leg that is straight and strong, but not locked, may take years of work. Aminah does a simple exercise here that helps her feel her hamstring in a straight-ish standing leg, a key component of working with hyperextension.

It will also take a teacher who understands the body, and hypermobility, and how to help you.

Working turnout through a range of motion with @arialarawilton . She's got a plentiful amount of natural turnout, so the hardest part for this bendy body is actually the spine stability throughout the movement.

Hypermobility can be gorgeous in dance. It can also cause instability and vulnerability that other dancers may not struggle with.

Be sure you're equipped to give these dancers the support they need!
